Raven heard more footsteps, and noticed a tall, muscular figure approaching from the north. It looked promising, so he adjusted his magical eye. Suddenly he could see the man’s face in beautiful detail.

Yes - the information he’d been given was correct! Stormwalker had arrived!

He had indeed toned down his appearance; removed the rings from his eyebrows, cut off his long, distinctive braid, and covered the lightning-bolt tattoo. But Raven knew that beneath these cosmetic changes lurked the vile killer he’d followed across two worlds. He had memorised that pale, round face.

Raven lifted his crossbow and aimed at Stormwalker's bobbing blonde head. He breathed heavily, heart hammering with excitement. In his mind’s eye he could see the bolt shattering the evil wizard’s skull and entering his brain. If he took the bastard down now, his mission would be over for good. He could take the Eidolons back to the Mahatmas, return the troublesome Jeanne to her father, hand over the mage’s head - and claim his reward.

When the news that he’d killed Stormwalker emerged, he would become even more well-known - possibly even a hero.

Then a bizarre pounding noise intruded on his concentration. He looked up in surprise. A long, thin machine was moving swiftly across the sky, spinning blades holding it aloft. “Dear God,” Raven gasped. Had the strange craft seen him lying on the rooftop? He wasn’t shielded by any spells.

But when the thing passed over and disappeared behind some trees, Raven realised it hadn’t spotted him. He looked back down, searching for Stormwalker, but the wizard was walking into one of the townhouses opposite. As Raven brought his bow to bear, the mage slammed the front door behind him. Raven had blown his chance.

Cursing the untimely arrival of that weird flying machine, the mercenary shouldered his bow and twisted the flight gem on his wrist-band. I’ll have to get him inside, he decided as he checked his surroundings for watchers, then leapt across to the wizard’s building.
